John Ussary and Wives of Platte Co., MO.
John Ussary was born Dec. 20, 1821 in Campbell Co., TN to Capt. William Ussary and Phoebe Snodderly. On December 23, 1847, in
Buchanan Co., MO, he married his first wife Elizabeth Ann Cockerman. After her death in 1858, he then married Lucinda Bledsoe. Lucinda was
born August 3, 1843 in Tennessee and died Oct 1, 1900 in Platte Co., MO. They were married March 17, 1861 in Platte Co., MO. John died
March 4, 1894 and Lucinda died Oct 1, 1900. Both he and Lucinda are buried in the New Market Cemetery in Platte Co., MO.
On January 20, 1890, in Buchanan Co., MO, John Ussary filed for pension based on his military service during the Mexican War. John served
as a Private, Co. B, Capt. Woods, Augney's Battalion, Missouri Infantry. He enlisted June 28, 1846 and was discharged 18, 1847. He stated that
he contracted rheumatism on or about 15 October 18__, at Santa Fe. "I was a company cook and became very warm through baking bread in a
very warm adobe house."
After John's death in 1894, Lucinda filed a claim ( Mexican War Dependent's Certificate No. 9301; can No. 481; Bundle 8) for John's pension
She testified that John had marched from Ft. Leavenworth about the 27th June 1846 under Gen. W.S. Kearney, to Santa Fe, and remained in
that neighborhood three months, then returned to Ft. Leavenworth."
To assist Lucinda in her claim, a Mr. Isaac Dean, aged 72 years, swore that he and John had been school boys together in Jackson Co., MO
and their families moved to Platte Purchase in 1838, near New Market. He also testified that Elizabeth Cochran, John's first wife, had died about
1858.
Lucinda received a pension of $8.00 per month commencing March 5, 1894.
The following is John's obituary written by his son-in-law P.S. Trotter -
John Ussary was born Dec. 20, 1821 in or near Jacksborough, TN He came to Missouri in 1833 when he was 12 years of age with his father
Capt. William Ussary. He died March 1894.
When he was 25 years old he enlisted in Capt. Woods Volunteers for Mexican War. He was married in 1848 to Elizabeth Cochran. They had
three children: Laura, Claudius and Eugenia. Elizabeth died in 1856. He was a widow until 1861 when he married Lucinda Bledsoe. They raised
6 children: Phoebe, Stonewall, Mattie, Lizzie, John and Riley. Mr. Ussary was a truthful man and a more honest man would be hard to find. He
loved a good joke. He was a loving kind man to his family. A very obliging neighbor. He was a hard working man and never fooled away much
time. He was 6 ft. 2 inches in height and weighed about 195 lbs. when he was at his best. He was a carpenter and chair maker. He lived all but
the last five years at New Market. He had lived the last five years near Wallace, MO.

Laura "Puss" Ussary was born Dec 24, 1848 in New Market, Platte Co., MO to John Ussary and Elizabeth Ann Cockerham. She died May 8,
1913 in St. Joseph, Buchanan Co., MO. She married George/ Henry Washington Vestal who was born May 7, 1847 in Wallace, Buchanan Co.,
MO and died Jan 18, 1922 in St. Joseph, Buchanan Co., MO. They had the following children:

2 1891 in Atchison Co., KS, he married his first wife was Parzade Vestal who was born March 21, 1873. She died Dec 25, 1917. His second wife
